Responsive Drivers Uganda (ReDU) is steadily building a culture of responsible driving, safer journeys, and empowered communities—one school, one driver, and one family at a time. Through strategic interventions, training, and community engagement, ReDU has created measurable impact across schools, communities, and transport sectors.
Child Road Safety (UN-Habitat ACRoS Project)
7,500+ pupils sensitized on Safe Journey to School
30 school access roads assessed and mapped
20+ zebra crossings supported or restored
15 Ololipop (traffic guides) deployed
25+ child-led road safety clubs established

Youth Empowerment Achievements

A youth group, Kacel Watwero Youth Initiative, was formed at
Atiak Kal Market, Amuru District.
- 15 active members
- 50 litres of liquid soap produced per week
- Savings and Loans Scheme established
- Over 30 youths trained in business and income-generation skills.
Community Engagement & Outreach
- 21 radio talk shows (USAID-funded) reaching over 130,000 listeners
- Multiple community meetings held with PTAs, SMCs, vendors, and boda-boda riders
- Regular monitoring visits conducted with District Local Governments (DLGs)
- Stakeholder collaboration strengthened in 3 districts

Strategic Approach
ReDU adopts a systems-based approach to road safety, recognizing the interplay between human behavior, vehicle standards, enforcement, and infrastructure.
Its strategy combines advocacy, research, capacity building, and communication to influence both institutional behavior and public awareness.
Participatory methods engage drivers, riders, community leaders, and enforcement officers to identify practical solutions tailored to Uganda’s realities.

Research & Data Collection
Conducted 10+ community road-safety surveys, generating insights that informed:
- Child Safety Interventions – Developing targeted programs for safer school travel.
- Urban Planning Inputs – Guiding city planners on traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
- Road Design Improvements – Providing evidence for safer road infrastructure.
- School-Access Safety Reports – Assessing and recommending safer routes for students.
Child Leadership & Creativity
Responsive Drivers Uganda (ReDU) fostered child leadership and creativity in road safety through:
- 12 major road safety songs written and performed by pupils.
- Creative IEC materials developed in English and local languages.
- Child-led safety clubs actively performing during school assemblies and community meetings.
Continued Project Support
Even after project completion, ReDU remains actively engaged by:
- Conducting follow-up visits to monitor progress.
- Supporting safety clubs in schools and communities.
- Assessing school environments for ongoing safety improvements.
- Providing technical advice to local communities.
- Conducting trainings for drivers, teachers, and community members.
