Organizational Background
Responsive Drivers Uganda (ReDU) is a registered national NGO founded in 2014 and officially registered in 2016. The organization was born out of the need to address the increasing number of preventable road crashes claiming thousands of lives annually in Uganda.
ReDU’s founder and Executive Director, Eng. Komakech Joseph Ojambo, a road safety engineer, spearheaded the idea of Uganda’s first-ever Road Safety Week, launched in 2016 in Gulu City. His proposal to the Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) has since evolved into a national annual event that continues to raise awareness and mobilize stakeholders for safer roads.
From a grassroots coalition of professional drivers and transport workers, ReDU has grown into a recognized national stakeholder in road safety and public health promotion, working with partners such as Uganda Police Force, MoWT, UN-Habitat, USAID, and the Road Safety Advocacy Coalition Uganda (ROSACU).

CORE VALUES
ReDU’s work is guided by five key values that drive our approach to road safety and community engagement:
- Professionalism – Maintaining high standards in all programs and operations.
- Integrity – Acting with honesty, transparency, and ethical responsibility.
- Accountability – Ensuring responsible use of resources and measurable impact.
- Collaboration – Building strong partnerships and engaging communities.
- Innovation – Applying creative solutions and evidence-based practices to road safe

Our Approach
ReDU’s strategy is anchored on the “3Es” of Road Safety — Education, Enforcement, and Engagement.
We adopt a systems-based approach that recognizes the link between human behavior, vehicle standards, enforcement, and infrastructure. By combining advocacy, research, capacity building, and communication, ReDU influences both institutional behavior and public awareness.
Our participatory model empowers drivers, riders, community leaders, and enforcement officers to co-create local solutions that reflect Uganda’s transport realities.
Alignment:
ReDU’s mission supports the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021–2030) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3.6 and 11.2), which aim to halve global road deaths and ensure safe, accessible transport for all.
